Abstract

AbstractIn sedentary and transhumant cattle herds calving cows' weights were significantly different only at six and 12 months after calving. Cows under the sedentary system had the highest weights and those calving in the early dry and rainy seasons had the highest calving weights. Under the sedentary system, cows had the highest milk yields throughout the 12 months after calving and calves had the highest weight gains up to 12 months. Male calves had higher birth weights and weight gains than females. Production system and calving season effects on calf mortality were not significant. Copyright © 2003 Whurr Publishers Ltd
