Abstract

Four species of parasites were found in certain organs and tissues of 367 mooneye collected from the Assiniboine River during a 12-month period. One specimen of the acanthocephalan Pomphorhynchus bulbocolli was noted in each of two mooneye. Over 85% of all mooneye aged I–VIII were infected with the nematode Cystidicoloides tenuissima and (or) the flukes Paurorhynchus hiodontis and Crepidostomum hiodontos. Incidence of infection in "young-of-the-year" was lower (45–74%) and no young fish netted in June had parasites. Abundance of C. tenuissima and P. hiodontis in infected fish varied from peaks in summer to lows in winter. Maximum numbers of C. hiodontos occurred during winter. Cystidicoloides tenuissima and C. hiodontos were located primarily in the gut, but P. hiodontis was widely spread throughout the body tissues.
