Abstract
The movements of longear sunfish, Lepomis megalotis, in the headwaters of three Louisiana streams were studied by electrofishing and mark-recapture techniques. A total of 352 fish were marked by fin-clipping and 72 recaptures were made over a 31-month period. Fifty-one recaptures (71%) were within the stream sections where they were marked (average length 42 m). This coincides well with data of other workers who estimated home ranges of 21-61 m for this species. During the warmer months (April-October) 337 fish (average T.L. of 90 mm) were taken in the marking section, but in winter (November-March) only 124 fish (average T.L. of 73 mm) were taken in the same sections. The sunfish appeared to desert their home ranges in winter.
