Abstract
abstract This briefing seeks to critically explore the relationship between religion, culture and gender construction, as the ‘unholy trinity’ in promoting and sustaining violence against women. It will do so through three ways: firstly, through an examination of two narratives (one historical and the other biblical), secondly through the views presented at a panel discussion and, finally, through a case study. The narratives and case study will show how religion, culture and gender construction ‘conspire’ in the abuse of women. The briefing brings the discussion to a close with an appraisal of the focus areas and empirical evidence presented. It then moves on to propose a deliberate and complex set of counter-strategies to the ‘unholy trinity’.
