Abstract

We have found that large amounts of boron can be incorporated in the NbO 2 lattice without altering its basic distorted rutile structure. The electrical conductivity of the small-polaron conductor, NbO 2, shows a remarkable increase with addition of boron and a change from semiconductor-like to metal-like behaviour. However, no superconductivity is observed down to 4.2K in this system, which lacks a metal-oxygen layer structure.
