Abstract

In an attempt to detect the two decay modes of the mu /sup +/ meson, mu /sup +/ yields e/sup +/ + e/sup -/ and mu /sup +/ yields e/sup +/ + nu + nu (bar over) + e/sup +/ + e/sup -/, slow pi /sup +/ mesons were stopped in a liquid hydrogen bubble chamber placed in a magnetic field of 8800 gauss. The experiment consisted in examining the mu /sup +/ endings for those events which had 3 prongs and then measuring the vector momenta of these secondaries. From a total sample of 2.2 x 10/sup 5/ mu /sup +/'s, three events were found where three charged prongs emerged from the mu /sup +/ ending. The total energy of the three secondaries was in each case 51 plus or minus 3.5, 55 plus or minus 1.5, and 33 plus or minus 2 Mev and their resultant momenta 47 plus or minus 3.5, 54 plus or minus 1.5, and 29 plus or minus 2 Mev/c, respectively.
