Abstract

To search for magnetic ordering in YbPdSb we performed low temperature measurements of electric resistivity ( T ⩾ 0.5 K), specific heat ( T ⩾ 0.6 K), Mössbauer spectroscopy ( T ⩾ 0.07 K) and neutron diffraction ( T ⩾ 0.01 K). All experiments were performed on the same YbPdSb sample. The results suggest the existence of a magnetic short range order in YbPdSb: decreasing temperature from 4.2 K towards 1 K antiferromagnetic short-range order appears in the neutron diffraction spectra. No magnetic Bragg peaks are observed down to 0.01 K. The presence of a hyperfine field in the Mössbauer spectra indicates spatial correlations of Yb 3+ moments up to 5 K. These correlations correspond to a magnetic moment of 1.3μ B at 0.07 K and are of dynamical nature above 1 K.
