Abstract

Transmission infrared spectroscopy has been used to search for the chemisorptive stabilization of formyl (HCO) on Al 2O 3-supported Rh surfaces. Formaldehyde (H 2CO) and glyoxal (HCO) 2 have been used as potential sources of HCO. In addition, chemisorbed CO on Rh has been treated with atomic deuterium in an attempt to produce DCO. None of these routes have led to spectroscopically detectable levels of formyl adsorption at temperatures near or above 100 K. These results suggest that the formyl intermediate may not be a stable surface species on Rh in CO-hydrogenation chemistry.
