Abstract

We have searched for a state in Ne 20 which would form a doublet with the known 2 − state at 4.97 MeV. Such a state is desired so that the observed stellar neon may be produced in the helium-burning stage of stellar evolution. Alpha spectra from the Na 23(p, α)Ne 20 reaction were analysed by a broad-range magnetic spectrograph but failed to show any evidence that the 4.97 MeV state is a doublet. The data place limitations on the relative energy and intensity of a second state near 4.97 MeV. Qualitatively, the spectra would be difficult to reconcile with a doublet separation greater than 15 keV. It is concluded that it is improbable that the 4.97 MeV state is a doublet; alternative modes of producing neon in ordinary states are mentioned.
