Abstract

A gamma-gamma coincidence measurement was performed in order to search for a neutral scalar particle associated with beta decay with a mass near 17 keV. The measurement used a 35S source and two LEPS-type Ge detectors. A coincidence signal above the background generated by random bremsstrahlung coincidences would be a signature of the two-photon decay of a light neutral scalar particle. No evidence was found for such a particle with a mass near 17 keV with a lifetime shorter than 1 nanosecond.
