Abstract

The Subseabed Disposal Program (SDP) includes a set of heat‐transfer experiments on the ocean floor, planned for 1986. The concept is to provide data on the local heating of seabed sediment released by buried radioactive waste materials. The In Situ Heat Transfer experiment (ISHTE) involves placing a 400‐W isotopic heat source and related equipment frame on the seabed at a depth of approximately 6000 m. Data will be recorded at the site, some of which will be transmitted to a surface vessel by acoustic telemetry. The entire apparatus will be recovered within 1 year.
