Abstract
Secretary of Commerce Frederick B. Dent has announced the award of a $431,700 National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration Sea Grant to Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, Woods Hole, Massachusetts.Among the Sea Grant research projects being carried out at Woods Hole is one to develop a marine poly‐culture system based on natural food chains and utilizing the effluent from secondary sewage treatment, agricultural wastes, wastes from fisheries, and commercial fertilizer as nutrient sources. Also under study are pheromones, which, along with other natural substances, are used by animals for chemical communication in the marine environment. The aim of the research is to synthesize the compound and to understand its role in the animals' behavior. In another series of studies, tests are being made to determine the effects of petroleum contamination on marine animals.
