Since the initial description >30 y ago, therapeutic options for mitochondrial encephalopathy, lactic acidosis, and stroke- like episodes (MELAS) syndrome, the most well-known of the mitochondrial disorders (MIDs), remain limited due to the complexity of its genetic background and its clinical manifestations (1,2).
