Abstract
In Le Roman de l’énergie nationale, Maurice Barrès (1862-1923) sought to structure his course, by rewriting his earlier writings, egotistical novels, chronicles or travel books. The rewrite was a critical reuse, where the writer established a polemical dialogue with himself. In a cycle centered on French life, the novelist distanced himself with the praise of the cosmopolitanism he had originally delivered. For this purpose, he created a new variation on Marie Bashkirtseff, adding to the picture of the cosmopolitan woman a critical speech delegated to the narrator. Basing our analyses on the study of the Barres manuscripts kept at the BNF, we analyze the aesthetic and ideological issues at the heart of the Barres rewrites.
