Abstract

Based on the SDGs, basic research was conducted to apply ESD to the college of education. This study investigated how 69 pre-service teachers majoring in earth science education perceive the future earth environment and what views they have on environmental changes. A concept sketch method that expresses awareness of the global environment in pictures and allows participants to freely write personal explanations was utilized. In addition, they chose their feelings regarding the change in the earth's environment from positive, neutral, and negative, answered open-ended questions, and conducted a semi-structured interview according to their intention to participate. Pre-service teachers perceive the future global environment as a space created by human influence and modification of nature by human needs. Therefore, they believe that the future global environment will be different as a result of the choices we make today. Even considering the situation in which the study was conducted, during the COVID-19 pandemic, the perspective of pre-service teachers on environmental changes on the planet is very negative. Global environment education, which can realize sustainable development education, must be essential in university education, especially in the College of Education, which nurtures pre-service teachers who will be responsible for the education of future generations.
