Abstract

This article examines the attendance at the Basel University by students from 42 imperial cities from the Upper Rhine, Swabian, Franconian and Bavarian imperial circles in the period 1460 to 1802. The analysis focuses on the chronology of these students’ university attendance and their educational goals. The author also tries to identify particular urban and regional educational patterns. In the concluding part, results of this research on attendance at the Basel University in the 17th and 18th centuries are compared with the results of this author’s earlier research on attendance at the University of Strasbourg by students from the same imperial cities.
