Abstract

The porcelain objects in sculptor Jessica Rath’s project “Take Me to the Apple Breeder” look just like what they’re based on: apples. However, they’re apples far beyond the familiar varieties of the grocery store or farmer’s market. The hefty Deacon Jones is the size of a baby’s head. The Sunset Cluster are like yellow plums. Another type is the size of small cherries. Rath’s work is based on a visit to the US Department of Agriculture’s Plant Genetic Resources Unit (PGRU) in Geneva, New York.
