Scully Jr., M.D.Primm will continue to serve as director of APA's Office of Minority and National Affairs (OMNA) and director of its Minority Fellowships Program.In her expanded role as deputy medical director, Primm will act on Scully's behalf during his absence, “leading the staff in carrying out the APA mission and policies set by the Board of Trustees,” Scully said in a written announcement.“Being selected deputy medical director is a tremendous honor and leadership opportunity,” Primm told Psychiatric News. “I look forward to working closely with Dr. Scully, APA leadership, and APA staff to achieve the organization's mission and goals.”Primm has headed OM NA since 2004. The office, created 35 years ago—and led for 27 of those years by diversity pioneer Jeanne Spurlock, M.D.—serves the professional needs of minority and underrepresented psychiatrists, psychiatrists in training, and medical students interested in specializing in psychiatry. Through various initiatives OMNA also advocates for the elimination of mental health care disparities experienced by many members of minority and underserved populations.Prior to joining APA, Primm had a 19-year affiliation with the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine, where she held a number of staff positions, including heading the Johns Hopkins Hospital Community Psychiatry Program.Primm is a graduate of Harvard-Radcliffe College and Howard University College of Medicine. She completed her residency in psychiatry and a fellowship in social and community psychiatry at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine. She also received her master's of public health degree from the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. ISSUES NewArchived
