Abstract

This chapter introduces the immersive journalism practice of screenplay writing for illustrating a news story or phenomenon. The chapter explores the evolving definitions of literary journalism, or journalism as storytelling. It discusses immersion in news reporting as a practice aimed at increasing audience engagement with news, before and after the introduction of virtual reality to journalism practice. Within the field of immersive journalism, several projects that make use of screenplay in some form for illustrating an event or phenomenon of journalistic importance are reviewed. The boundaries between art and journalism as they are formed and blurred within this practice are discussed. Ethical considerations and social implications of the use of screenplay writing with respect to immersive journalism practice are examined.
