Abstract

ISSUE: During an outbreak of pertussis-like illness among staff at our medical center, our primary goal was to prevent exposure of young infants to potentially contagious health care personnel (HCP). To do this, we instituted a sign-in process at each of the four units housing infants. This allowed exclusion of potentially contagious people, and gave us an opportunity to assess the number and type of HCP and other visitors to these units. Early in the outbreak, we had considered vaccinating only those HCP most likely to have contact with infants.
