Abstract

Line-shape analyses of core-level photoemission peaks in ${\mathrm{LaAl}}_{2}$ have shown that the La 4d level is more symmetric than the other La core levels. This is attributed to scattering of f symmetry states which are not sufficiently lowered by the core-hole potential and are located near the Fermi level in the core-hole state. The 6s partial screening charge is suggested to be very small or slightly positive, i.e., of antiscreening type. In contrast to the alkaline-earth metals, there is little evidence for high-energy satellites originating from poorly screened (sp-screened) final states.
