Abstract

Background & aims: Malnutrition affects up to 46% of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) outpatients. Due to the inflammatory response and altered dietary habits, IBD patients should be screened for malnutrition on admission to healthcare institutions. However, this is not carried out routinely in the IBD outpatient settings; leading to poor identification and treatment of malnutrition. The objectives were to estimate the spot prevalence of undernutrition in adult patients with IBD, the frequency of routine screening for malnutrition risk performed by their clinicians and the number of patients who are deemed for referral for dietetic review and the proportion of them screened by their clinicians.
