Abstract

By an indirect biochemical method, used for the first time for the purpose under study, the authors have screened a village population for cancer of the stomach. The organization, results and experiences obtained in this screening study are described. By determining the total lactic-acid dehydrogenase activity of the gastric juice, a ‘high-risk’ group was selected in which further investigations detected 7 cases of gastric cancer, including 3 in the early stage. These 7 patients represent 4.56o‰ of the total number of people screened (1,534 individuals). This high incidence calls attention to the great gastric-cancer morbidity of the ‘high-risk’ population. The method is suggested as suitable for use in mass screening studies; after trials in larger material, it may be used on a wider scale.
