Abstract

We evaluated the Abbott ADx analyzer for abused substances and compared it to the Abbott TDx for screening urine specimens for six classes of abused drugs. The sensitivities of five of the assays (for amphetamines, barbiturates, benzodiazepines, cannabinoids, and opiates) were lower than the detection limits claimed by the manufacturer. The sensitivity of the cocaine metabolites assay is twice the value claimed but is still very low. Intrarun CVs of the ADx are typically less than 5%, and inter-run precision is comparable to the TDx. Both analyzers correlated for 150 urine specimens except for one specimen that tested positive for cannabinoids by the TDx but negative by the ADx. The ADx offers flexible access operation so that one urine sample may be tested for several abused substances in a single analytical run. The analyzer is well suited for performing emergency toxicology screening for drugs of abuse.
