Abstract

An improved method for screening for atypical mycobacteria is described. The method is composed of three tests: (1) test for growth on PNB medium; (2) test for growth on HA medium; (3) test for photochromogenicity. The tests are carried out on the following media: (1) Ogawa egg medium (Löwenstein-Jensen medium may be substituted) containing no agent (control); (2) Ogawa egg medium containing 0·5 mg./ml. sodium p-nitrobenzoate (PNB medium); (3) Ogawa egg medium containing 62·5 (μg./ml. hydroxylamine (HA medium). By these, other mycobacteria can clearly be differentiated from M. tuberculosis and M. bovis.
