Abstract

1. A critical examination of the existing data on X-ray satellite spectra has led to a fuller information regarding the occurrence of pairs of satellite lines in theK, L andM regions, showing more or less constant value ofΔ√ν/R, similar to the screening doublets in the X-ray energy levels of singly ionised atoms. 2. In theK region the new pairs found areα3α′3,α′'3α′3,α′'3α4 andα6α7. The pairsα′'3α′ andα′'3α′3, although not very convincing, are nevertheless noteworthy. The pairsα3α4,α′α4 andα′α3 reported earlier in 1931 by Deodhar have been extended up toZ=40. The pairsα5α6 reported earlier by Deodhar andβ6β7 reported earlier by Deodhar and Padalia, have been confirmed but not included in the relevant Tables. 3. In theL region six new pairsα″α‴,αixαx,β′1β″1,β′2β″2,β′5β″5,γ′2γ″2 and a groupβ2a(β′2,β2b,β″2,β2c) have been found, which on the whole show a fairly good degree of constancy ofΔ√ν/R values. 4. In theM region out of the two pairsα′α″ andβ1β11 the latter shows much better constancy ofΔ√ν/R values. 5. A view has been expressed and discussed that the possible role played by screening in the emission of satellite spectra should naturally lead to the occurrence of numerous pairs of satellite lines showing the property of screening doublets in the X-ray energy levels of singly ionised atoms.
