Abstract

Physical scratches on 2in video tapes cause severe degradation in viewable picture quality. A new algorithm for locating these defects is presented, based on the way in which the data are mapped onto the tape and how the scratches affect corresponding image pixels. Also, the mapping onto tape results in optimal image feature preservation, i.e. only the features affected by the scratch are processed.
