Abstract

Effects of the orientation of dendrites on the scratch hardness and wear performance of laser-melted steels have been investigated. Scratch experiments have been carried out with a Vickers indenter and wear experiments with a pin-on-disk tester. The deformed structure is investigated, using transmission electron, stereo scanning electron and light microscopy. The scratch experiments reveal a pronounced relation between the scratch hardness and the orientation of dendrites. A model that takes into account the deformed topography of the surface turns out to be consistent with the microstructural investigations. The wear behaviour displays a different dependence on the orientation of dendrites. The concentration of segregated carbides is the predominant factor.
