Abstract

Significance During her time in office, the SNP became Scotland's dominant political force and Sturgeon's approval ratings were among the highest of any politician. Her departure raises questions over the direction of the independence movement and support for Scottish independence. Impacts Brexit has made independence more complicated, given that it would theoretically lead to a hard border between Scotland and England. A UK government under Keir Starmer is unlikely to consent to a referendum on Scottish independence. Sturgeon’s departure could lead to a more fragmented independence movement, similar to what has happened in Catalonia.
