Abstract

To clarify the effect of the radical nitriding treatment on the scoring resistance of stainless steel SUS 440 C spur gears, scoring test was carried out under forced lubrication using a power-circulating gear test rig. From the test, the following results were obtained. (1) The scoring resistance of the gear pairs in which both the pinion and the wheel were nitrided (gear pair R-R) and/or only pinion was nitrided (gear pair R-N) was 1.8∼2 times as large as that of the gear pair without nitriding (gear pair N-N). However, for the case of the gear pair in which only wheel was nitrided (gear pair N-R), the effect of the radical nitriding treatment on the scoring resistance of the gears was small. (2) The values of critical surface temperature at the incipient stage of scoring for gear pairs R-R and R-N were higher than 797°C, and these were at least 256°C as high as that for gear pair N-N. (3) The sound pressure level for gear pair R-R was about 4∼5 dB as lower as that of the gear pairs R-N, N-R and N-N.
