Abstract

In India, small scale industries account for about 40% of the total industrial output and is only second to the agricultural sector in providing employment. Small Industries Development Organization acts as a nodal agency in guiding the small scale industries sector through the challenges of the liberalized economic policies. West Bengal, which is a leading state in propagation of cottage and small scale industry, wth around 350000 units providing employment to about 2.2 million people, has a well defined plan for advancement of this sector, through the active support of West Bengal Small Industries Development Corporation and other agencies under the Department of Cottage and Small Scale Industries, in the form of infrastructure development, creation of industrial estates and marketing and raw material support. Though the number of units in West Bengal is high, the incidence of sickness, poor management and the paucity of finances are causes for concern.
