Abstract

Scleroderris canker occurs in all provinces of Canada except Prince Edward Island, Manitoba, and Saskatchewan. Three races of the causal fungus, Gremmeniella abietina (Lagerb.) Morelet, have been determined serologically. The North American race is widely distributed. The European race, first detected in Canada in 1978 generally produces symptoms and damage indistinguishable from those of the North American race. To date, steps have been taken to destroy or closely monitor all material confirmed to be infected with the European race.
