Abstract

Development, compilation, and publication of scientometric indicators has a decade long history at ISSRU, Budapest, Hungary. A 32-country comparative evaluation of indicators for the period 1976-19801 was followed by a series of "facts and figures" in the journal Scientometrics. 2 The "World Flash on Basic Research" series concluded in a comprehensive set of indicators on 2649 journals and 96 countries for the 1981-1985 period. 3 Scientometric Indicators Datafdes, 1980-1989 (SCIND09) is a comprehensive set of publication output and citation impact indicators representing the continuation of the above efforts. The basic data source of SCIND09 is the Science Citation Index R (SC1) database of the Institute for Scientific Information (ISI, Philadelphia, PA, USA), who is the proprietary owner thereof. Design and realization of the computer software for cleaning the rough SCI data and building and processing the datafiles is the product of ISSRU, Budapest. Indicators of SCIND09 have not been (and most likely will not ever be) published in the form of a comprehensive collection similar to Ref. 3. Some selected data have, however, already been published by ISSRU (e.g., Ref. 4) as well as by foreign contractors (e.g., Ref. 5). In this compilation, publication and citation indicators of six geopolitical regions are presented. OECD countries are grouped into three categories: major, medium and small economies according to the usual OECD conventions. The USSR and 6 countries of the former "East European bloc" form the fourth region. 11 Asian and 11 Latin American countries were selected into the last two groups.
