Abstract

A thorough understanding of island arcs is crucial to modelers of plate tectonics, mantle differentiation, and crustal recycling. There exists, however, considerable uncertainty over issues ranging from the thermal structure beneath arcs to the fluxes of fluids and sediment from the downgoing slab. Furthermore, the relationship between back arc and island arc magmatism is not well understood either. Fortunately, significant developments are now being made in modeling the thermal structure of the mantle wedge as well as in analytical techniques.
