Abstract
U.S. scientists think public confidence in science and research has dropped, according to a recent poll. And they believe that science is used too often to fulfill a political agenda and that government agencies often use scientific research to support predetermined viewpoints. The telephone poll—done by the Tarrance Group, a Houston-based research firm—questioned a random sample of 254 physicians specializing in research and 254 natural scientists. The margin of error in findings is ±4.5%. Of those polled, 62% believe public confidence in scientific research and scientific findings has decreased over the past 10 years, but 24% say such confidence has increased. Most scientists agree policymakers use science to achieve their policy goals in controversial issues such as those regarding asbestos, pesticides, dioxins, environmental tobacco smoke, or water quality.
