Abstract

Most countries have rich and poor regions. In the UK, for instance, London and the south-east is the most wealthy region. Moreover, the southern half of the UK and the “golden triangle” of London, Oxford and Cambridge in particular seems to benefit most from the public funding of science and research. However, recent major investments in physics in Scotland and Northern Ireland and the possibility of a new accelerator centre in die north of England – are good news for the physics community throughout the UK.
