Abstract

During the third quarter of the nineteenth century a growing awareness of the needs of scientific and technological education in Britain led to a spate of new colleges which later were to acquire the status of universities. Between I87I and I88I six colleges were founded: the Armstrong College of Physical Science, Newcastle (I87I), the Yorkshire College of Science, Leeds (I874), the Firth College, Sheffield (I874), the Mason College of Science, Birmingham (i88o), University College, Nottingham (i88i) and University College, Liverpool (i 88 I).'
