Abstract

A scientific approach to the suppression of mine fires must proceed from the theory of spontaneous combustion. The first task is to evaluate the fire hazard in the mine workings so as to adopt the most rational and effective precautionary measures. Observation with the naked eye is not sufficient for this purpose. It requires a scientific approach, based on a physical interpretation of the fire-hazard factors which are observed. Therefore, a study has been made of the chemical activities of coals and certain other materials, and the geological and mining factors involved in the fire-hazard research. This has made it possible to propose a system of indices for evaluating the fire hazard for any given mining and geological conditions.
