Abstract

must cooperate with reporters in making the data simple enough for reporters to understand, reformulate, and convey to others. The best way to accomplish this is to focus the data around two to three key points, avoid jargon, and discuss the implications of the data in terms of the need (or lack thereof) for personal action. Epidemiologists and other sources need a better un derstanding of the press because the public needs a bet ter understanding of disease clusters. We believe that sources can learn to adjust to journalists' news-gathering practices without compromising their substantive mes sage and thus help communicate important health risk information to the public.
