Abstract

WORLD War II was, in essence, a war of Bcience in which the brains and industrial techniques of our scientists and engineers were matched against those of the enemy to produce the most advanced and effective devices of warfare and achieve military supremacy. The forces of science and industry were marshaled to invent and develop new devices, all of which were hold under a rigid cloak of military secrecy. Each warring nation spent hundreds of millions of dollars on both fundamental and applied research which, while primarily intended for the purpose of war, has equal or greater potentialities for commercial progress. The late war, as no other war in the history of civilization, was a war of science and industry in which the armed forces were, in essence, the cutting edge of the tool.
