Abstract

Science advances by drawing conclusions that do not vary about phenomena that do. Although this was not a consensus conference, I cannot help but be impressed at the consensus that was, in fact, achieved, even in the presence of investigations that led to divergent conclusions. The credit goes to the organizers, to the session chairmen, and, especially, to the participants. Repeatedly, we found investigators with conilicting results seeking a single, unifying explanation for both their sets of findings, rather than separate, inconsistent explanations for each. We all have benefitted from the result. Although the following comments apply to the nutritional management of hypertensive individuals, it is likely that useful new knowledge will come from the study of nomotensives as well.
