Abstract

Government plans to 'rationalise' British university research by reorganising it into tiers of excellence are liable to lead to the catastrophic breakdown of science as a knowledge producing system, claimed Dr Trevor Pinch of York University at the BA meeting. Dr Pinch, who took a first degree in physics and is now a lecturer in sociology, believes that whilst the systematic empirical study of how science actually develops is still in its infancy, such studies as there have been of 'the science of science' point to clear reasons why the setting up of centres of excellence with the best and most expensive equipment, but which do not recognise the social fabric of scientific activity, is dangerous.
