Abstract

A special issue of MR devoted to science seems odd, somehow out of place, even stranger than the issue two years ago on religion. People on the left tend either to condemn science or to worship it—to see science as the cause of our problems or as the solution. Both views end up with pretty much the same result; we leave science alone. The concepts of science are regarded as inevitable, and the products of science are passively received. This issue of MR is aimed against this passivity and not-so-benign neglect. This article can also be found at the Monthly Review website, where most recent articles are published in full.Click here to purchase a PDF version of this article at the Monthly Review website.
