Abstract
The article on “alternative” careers (Eos, March 15, 1994) was timely and apt. We would like to make two additional points: 1) research careers may soon become the “alternative” in an era of shrinking research budgets and 2) an area you did not include is science policy. The three of us have found productive, meaningful, and exciting positions in science policy at the Office of Management and Budget (OMB) within the Executive Office of the President. We all are AGU members, and have followed a similar path: a congressional fellowship under the auspices of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, leading to OMB, where we believe we are making a difference. In addition, although many fellows choose to return to their former positions, or to move into new positions with government agencies, a fair number remain in the employ of the U.S. Congress.
