Abstract

Some 250 scientists from nearly 70 countries gathered in Vienna, Austria, in late November to draw up recommendations focusing on the scientific knowledge needed to make rational environmental policy decisions in the coming decades. Their efforts resulted in ASCEND 21—an Agenda of Science for Environment & Development into the 21st century. ASCEND 21 aims to look beyond the state-of-the-art to help identify the scientific knowledge base needed for such policy decisions. A statement with recommendations that was issued at the close of the meeting is expected to form a key element of documentation for world leaders and their aides at the United Nations Conference on Environment & Development in Rio de Janeiro next June.
