Abstract

Concern regarding the American adult public's lack of "science literacy" has led to calls from within the professional community of scientists to popularize their work. While popularization can be effective in encouraging science literacy, the process of translating technical information into lay language has historically been subject to various forces that can distort or misrepresent the information. This article reviews techniques of good science popularization and suggests roles for information professionals in the promotion of science literacy.
