Abstract

AbstractNorth Queensland, in the northeast of Australia, holds a unique attraction for interdisciplinary scientists, as its tropical climate, its land and sea and social structure, all offer great research possibilities. In recent years, the marine sciences in particular have greatly expanded, and here the historical background to the environmental milieu and climatology are reviewed. In this particular arc of the Pacific Basin live a large proportion of the human race, and the area has one of the highest economic growth rates in the world.
