Abstract

According to a writer, Prof. Adam Malicki, in the new Polish monthly review, Zycie Nauki, May 1946, two plans are now being considered in connexion with science in Poland. One envisages the transforming of certain Polish universities (there are seven at present functioning) into higher professional training schools; the other involves an increase in the number of research institutes outside the universities. Past experience is said to have led to the conclusion that the acquisition of knowledge in a certain subject by a student is of less value than the gaining of an insight into the methods of scientific investigation and the solving of special problems. These objects can be best achieved by constant contact with creative men of science and by team-work in research. There may be difficulties in filling immediately all the posts at Polish universities, but their proper functioning is a matter of urgency on account of the large number of students enrolled. Another contributor, Dr. J. Parnas, urges that all research institutes should be placed under the supervision of the Polish Academy of Science and Letters, which should co-ordinate all investigations.
