Abstract
A country's science and innovation ecosystem is a function of social, cultural and political histories. Public science systems evolve to meet multiple objectives including the advancement of knowledge, economic growth, workforce development, social and environmental health, and good public policy. Given New Zealand's small size and nature of the economy, we face particular challenges and opportunities.
