Abstract
Abstract : This publication is the final, technical report of Science, Engineering, and Mathematics (SEM) at the Timbuktu Academy, for the period of August 1998 to May 2005. It provides a thorough description of the design, programs, activities, and results of the Academy. The production of 108 minority college graduates in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) disciplines, with 70% of Physics and Chemistry majors pursuing graduate degrees, with emphasis on the Ph.D., and the measurable enhancement of the pre-college preparation of over 800 students, in this reporting period, partly explain the reason Timbuktu Academy received the 2002 US Presidential Award for Excellence in Science, Mathematics, and Engineering Mentoring. Our 58 publications, 29 of which deal with teaching, mentoring, and learning, and our 177 presentations partly attest to our significant dissemination efforts. Selected publications, included in full in this report, provide a roadmap for the replication of our work, in cultivating academic excellence, and in closing achievement graps, while adding significantly to the scientific knowledge.
